The city resides at the point where the Atlantic Ocean is met by the River Douro. The legendary port produced in Oporto is perhaps it's greatest attraction. The wine is processed, blended and then aged in traditional old lodges within the Vila Nova da Gaia area, just across the river from the city.

Oporto's airport is called Francisco Sá Carneiro, it is situated under 800 miles from London and is therefore a short-haul flight. Airlines such as TAP have frequent direct flights from the UK which take around two and a quarter hours.

Visitors wishing to see how the port is made and have a taste should head for the lodges where the port is aged, here tours are held and finished with tasting sessions. Near to the lodges is the region of Ribeira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the process of being restored. Near the city itself are many coastal towns and resorts, there are quaint little fishing villages which are renowned for excellent seafood restaurants. A cruise is also a popular way to spend some time getting to know the country. Thanks to the easy atmosphere and the fantastic climate, Oporto has become excellent for holidays.
